World of Cake Decorating was formed in 1975 by Barry and Diane Lowe as a retail store from their main business Lowe’s Food Products (Formed 1970).
Starting with humble beginnings as a small store in the manufacturing plant showroom, Barry and Diane started to sell decorating supplies and some of their bakery products (Supercreme Icing, Food Colours) to local housewives and school teachers who were interested in learning how to bake and decorate their own cakes. In 1976, Barry became the first distributor of Wilton Cake Decorating supplies within Canada and put World of Cake Decorating on the map.
With World of Cake Decorating outgrowing the small store set up in the manufacturing plant, Barry and Diane opened up their first true retail location in Scarborough at Markham Road and Kingston Rd in early 1980. About 2 years later with demand still high, they opened their second location at 1959 Weston Rd just north of Lawrence Ave.
The Weston Road store became known throughout Toronto and parts of Ontario as “THE SPOT” to get all of your decorating needs. Barry and Diane also installed a small bakery, catering mostly to Birthday and Wedding Cakes. Diane ran the store on Weston Road, and became the main Cake Decorator. She was soon approached by some Caribbean customers, who could bake their traditional “RUM CAKES” but really didn’t know how to decorate.
They asked if Diane could decorate them, and soon afterwards, World of Cake Decorating became know for the “Place to have your Rum Cakes Decorated”, and to this day, is still the only place in Ontario to have your Rum Cakes decorated whether it is for a birthday, anniversary or Wedding. In 1993, World of Cake Decorating outgrew their location North of Lawrence Ave, so Barry and Diane moved their store to 1766 Weston Rd., South of Lawrence Ave. Business continued to grow, and their daughter Sheri soon joined the company.
Unfortunately, in early 2007, World of Cake Decorating suffered a tremendous loss with the passing of its founder Barry Lowe. Diane and Sheri have continued the strong tradition that Barry first started the company with, and since August of 2009, have expanded the store again and are now located at 2009 Lawrence Ave Unit #11 in the Tim Horton’s Plaza. They are still baking and decorating cakes, and have also started to sell “Homemade Pies, Cookies, Tarts and Cakes” at the local Weston Farmers Market every Saturday from May until October.
